The Municipality of Athens has launched a mobile app for accessing the municipality's network of electric vehicle charging stations, the local authorities said.
Through the Athens Charge app, drivers can locate available charging points on a map, start and monitor charging sessions, and make electronic payments. Charging is billed according to the amount of electricity used, at a rate of EUR 0.37 per kilowatt-hour, according to the announcement. The system initially covers 19 public charging stations across Athens. Until now, the municipality had covered the electricity costs at these stations in full, with the total bill exceeding EUR 200,000, according to local authorities.
New charging points will gradually be added to the network. The new system will also allow the municipality to monitor in real time which stations are available, how heavily they are being used and what payments are being made.
In addition to the municipal stations, numerous charging points operated by private companies are available across the Attica region, which includes Athens. According to PlugShare, as of October 1, the region had 2,077 public charging stations.
