Technological sovereignty should be a priority for Bulgaria as a member of the European Union, President Iliana Iotova said on Monday in Varna, on the Black Sea, where she officially opened the international Black Sea Technology Forum.

Iotova said technological sovereignty does not mean that Europe should isolate itself from the rest of the world, but rather that it should develop and protect the critical technologies on which its economy and security depend, maintain its own expertise and capabilities, and retain the freedom to choose its partnerships. Bulgaria should play a very active role in this process, the President said.

She also highlighted the impact of technological progress on human life and health, particularly in medicine. "We must be very responsible in this respect. Technology should be a tool, not a substitute for medicine," Iotova said.
