Bulgaria's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Radi Naydenov and Italian Ambassador Marcello Apicella conducted a meeting at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday to discuss the bilateral relations, the Ministry reported on Friday. The two discussed the excellent bilateral relations, based on shared European values and strategic priorities, as well as long-standing cultural, political, and economic ties.

Naydenov emphasized the importance of implementing European Corridor 8, noting that it not only contributes to Bulgaria’s connectivity with Italy but is also of strategic importance for the development of key regions in Southern Europe.

Apicella officially presented Italy’s candidacy for the post of Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization for the 2027-2031 period. He expressed hope for unity among EU Member States in supporting and nominating a joint candidate, as the FAO has not had a Director-General from Europe since 1975. He also highlighted the advantages of the Italian bid to host the new European Union Customs Authority in Rome, as the city boasts excellent modern facilities, as well as optimal conditions and social infrastructure for its staff.

Naydenov expressed gratitude for the good cooperation between Bulgaria and Italy not only on a bilateral level but also within the framework of multilateral policy and appealed for Italy’s support for Bulgaria’s candidacy for membership in the Council of the International Telecommunication Union, Region C for the 2027–2030 period.

The parties agreed on the need to continue their excellent bilateral cooperation in a spirit of mutual understanding and for the benefit of Europe’s prosperity.
