site.btaKardzhali Regional Governor Orders Activation of BG-ALERT System in Krumovgrad and Kirkovo over Heavy Rainfall

Kardzhali Regional Governor Nikola Chanev said on Wednesday that he has ordered the activation of the BG-ALERT system in the municipalities of Krumovgrad and Kirkovo due to the rainfall and the situation there. Chanev was in Krumovgrad, where he familiarized himself with the conditions in the town. 

The regional governor said the idea is to warn the population in the two municipalities about the declared red code, adding that the rainfall is expected to continue until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8. 

In Krumovgrad, Chanev met with Mayor Sebihan Mehmed and told the media that all state institutions are on the ground, including the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry, the Regional Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, and its director, Commissioner Sergey Zaimov.

“We are monitoring the situation. I am in contact with Mayor Shinasi Suleyman. Everything that can be done by the municipality and the institutions has been done,” Chanev said. 

The Regional Governor added that in Kirkovo Municipality the damage is mainly to infrastructure and that the specific disruptions are yet to be assessed. “There is damage, of course, there is a collapsed retaining wall, but there were no parked vehicles. Thank God, there is nothing that threatens human life,” Chanev said further. 

He added that in both municipalities the most direct monitoring is carried out by the mayors of the smaller settlements, who are on the ground and in constant communication with the municipal mayors.
