Venezuela is the latest example of the breakdown of the international rule of law as we have known it, and precedents have accumulated that increase risks to every country’s security, including Bulgaria, President Rumen Radev told journalists. He made the remarks after a ceremony during which the Bulgarian Armed Forces' field flags, services' colours, and standards that were carried in crucial battles of the past, were sprinkled with blessed water in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in downtown Sofia on Epiphany, January 6.
“This means that we must take much greater care of the Bulgarian Army, our own defence capabilities, as well as the strength and defensive weight of the alliances we are part of,” President Radev said, commenting on the situation with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. “We are witnessing the rule of force, which carries a number of risks for international security,” he added.
According to Radev, over the past year, the authorities have made intense efforts to limit the international activities and powers of the presidency - from the NATO summit to the UN General Assembly and beyond. “But now, when there is such significant activity and a willingness to express foreign policy, they strangely remain silent. The government, which according to the Constitution leads and implements foreign policy, does not dare either to formulate it or to declare it,” the President said.
