The health insurance fund will face a shortfall in revenues in 2025, Assoc. Prof. Petko Stefanovski, Governor of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), told journalists on Friday after a meeting of the Fund's Supervisory Board. Stefanovski said this information was provided to the NHIF by the Finance Ministry.

The revenue deficit will be around BGN 23 million, which the National Revenue Agency (NRA) cannot collect from health insurance contributions. Another meeting of the Supervisory Board has been scheduled for next week to decide how to distribute funds so that the NHIF budget breaks even as of December 31, 2025.

Earlier today, the Supervisory Board asked the NRA director, who is also a member of the Fund's Supervisory Board, for a written explanation as to why health insurance contributions cannot be collected.

At the meeting, the Supervisory Board also discussed the distribution of funds from the NHIF reserve. Stefanovski said BGN 146 million were allocated to cover hospital activity beyond the set limits and BGN 131 million were earmarked to cover other expenditures.
