A monument to national revolutionary and writer Zahari Stoyanov was unveiled next to the historic building of the National Assembly in Sofia on Friday. The monument was financed entirely by donations from nearly 50 donors, including citizens, private companies, politicians and political groups, scientists, and public figures.

The statue was officially unveiled by Dimitar Glavchev, Chairman of the Initiative Committee for the Construction of the Monument and head of the Bulgarian National Audit Office, sculptor Ivan Cholakov, artist Prof. Plamen Valchev, architect Dimitar Mladenov, and children from the Zahari Stoyanov School.

Among those present at the unveiling of the monument were Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev, Deputy Minister of Culture Todor Chobanov, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Sofia Municipal Councilor Greti Stefanova, MPs from Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria Nikolay Denkov, Manol Peykov, Tatyana Sultanova, and Andrey Tsekov, Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov, MPs from MRF - New Beginning Iskra Mihaylova, Stanislav Anastasov, and Atidze Aliyeva, and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev.

Unveiling the monument, Glavchev said Zahari Stoyanov devoted himself entirely to Bulgaria wherever he served. "It is difficult to find such a prominent figure in Bulgarian history. He always fulfilled every position he held with substance. From an ordinary revolutionary, he became deputy apostle in the Fourth Revolutionary District. After the Liberation, during the building of the new Bulgarian state, he charted the course it should follow," Glavchev added.

Justice Minister Georgiev described Stoyanov as a patriot, a driving force of the national liberation movement and the chronicler of the unsuccessful April Uprising against Ottoman rule in 1876. In the Minister's words, Stoyanov wrote without distinction between those who were educated in Paris and common manufacturers, demonstrating how the national cause can unite people far beyond petty disputes, conflicts and personal ambitions. Georgiev pointed out that Zahari Stoyanov was also part of the judicial system, having served as a district judge in the cities of Veliko Tarnovo and Ruse. He was a statesman and chaired the 5th National Assembly. One of the driving forces and principal ideologists of Bulgaria’s Unification, his contribution, the Minister said, deserves lasting recognition. "Today we may leave this place with pride and remembrance, but also with an awareness of our responsibility to measure our character against that of our national heroes," Georgiev added.
