The harvest campaign in the Taraclia District in Moldova is advancing steadily. Over one-third of all agricultural land has been processed so far, with yields significantly higher compared to last year, according to the District Directorate of Agriculture.

Out of a total of 22,400 hectares of farmland, 7,600 hectares have already been harvested. Barley harvest is 80% complete (3,100 ha out of a total of 3,900), while work on wheat and rapeseed is ongoing. For rapeseed, 2,000 ha out of 3,500 have been harvested, and for wheat, around 2,500 ha, which represents 15% of the 15,000 ha sown.

As Dimitri Georgiev, head of the Directorate, told Tuk.md, this season’s yields exceed last year’s by approximately 50%. This result is due both to favourable weather conditions in the spring and to the well-organized efforts of local farmers.

“Despite drought conditions and rising fuel prices, we are seeing significant progress with the early cereal crops. If this pace continues, the campaign will be completed by the end of July,” Georgiev emphasized.

Georgiev also noted that financial pressure on farmers remains considerable. Many are operating under heavy debt burdens accumulated over recent years due to persistent drought and high prices of fuel and lubricants.

Despite these challenges, the current season could turn out to be one of the most successful for the Taraclia District in terms of crop volume.

The Taraclia District is located in the southern part of Moldova and comprises 26 localities, including two towns, Taraclia and Tvardita. According to the 2014 census, the district has a population of about 40,000, of whom 66% are ethnic Bulgarians.
