The Municipality of Bosilegrad, Serbia, has received three Ikarbus-brand buses to establish an organized public transportation system within its territory, the municipality told local media on Friday. The vehicles were donated by the City of Belgrade as part of a broader initiative, which saw a total of 40 buses granted free of charge to the municipalities of Novi Sad, Kikinda, Stara Pazova, and Bosilegrad.
Bosilegrad is home to a large Bulgarian community.
This marks the first time in ten years that Bosilegrad is introducing an organized public transport service that meets modern standards. The aim is to improve access to essential services, reduce the isolation of rural areas, and improve the daily lives of residents.
Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic said that the donation was made possible thanks to reforms in the public transport sector. Following the purchase of new vehicles, Belgrade is now able to donate buses to other local governments in Serbia. Representatives from the Belgrade Municipality noted that the donated buses are in good condition and are being transferred as part of the city’s fleet modernization.
Bosilegrad Mayor Vladimir Zahariev said that the buses will be used on local and intercity lines. “These donated buses mean a lot to the people of Bosilegrad. They will be especially useful for students and workers who travel daily to school and work,” he noted.
The buses will be put into service once technical preparations and registration are completed.
