The eastern flank of the European Union must receive more funding in order to guarantee security, Bulgarian MEP Ivaylo Valchev of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group told journalists on Thursday. Valchev is hosting an ECR leadership meeting in Sofia.
“The fact that this forum is being held in Sofia means that the issues we are discussing are equally important for us as Bulgarians and for the ECR group,” Valchev stressed. He noted that the agenda includes migration and EU enlargement in the Western Balkans. Another key focus is Bulgaria’s role at the centre of Europe’s energy independence, since the country has preserved its nuclear energy sector and has not yet “killed off” its coal mines, Valchev added.
He emphasized that the topics discussed in Sofia were chosen to avoid being abstract but instead directly linked to Bulgaria, so that the country could derive the greatest possible benefit. The aim, he said, is that when the ECR forum concludes tomorrow, concrete decisions will be put forward that could be proposed to Bulgaria.
