Bulgaria can help build a competitive Europe, and unity is needed more than ever, President Iliana Iotova told the Green Transition Forum on Monday. The forum’s sixth edition focuses on a competitive, innovative and secure Europe and runs through June 5.
This year’s theme, a competitive, innovative and secure Europe, raises the key question facing the EU today: whether it can turn strategies into results and results into trust, Iotova said. She said it can, adding that Europe needs renewed ambition.
Iotova said Europe will not become more competitive by becoming more divided, more secure if defence becomes a market for only a handful of countries, or stronger if people leave. Bulgaria has its place in that Europe, not as a periphery but as a centre, not as an observer but as a participant, she said.
On the idea of a two-speed Europe, Iotova said it may seem a convenient mechanism for faster decision-making, but in the long term it risks political stratification, regional blocs and new invisible borders inside the Union. The EU was not created to rank member states as first and second class, she said, adding that its greatest strength is its ability to turn differences into a shared direction.
