On this date in Bulgarian history:

1876: Detachment formed by freedom fighter Hristo Botev wages battle at Lyutibrod, where a dozen or so of its members perish. Botev himself is killed the previous day.

1957: Wrestler Petko Sirakov wins Bulgaria's first gold medal at World Freestyle Wrestling Championship in Istanbul, Turkiye.

1964: Monument to Hristo Botev is unveiled in Vratsa (Northwestern Bulgaria).

1974: Bulgaria establishes diplomatic relations with Guinea-Bissau.

1997: First strike in commercial media outlet, 168 Chasa Press Group, with demands for employment agreements and higher wages.

1999: MiG-21 warplane crashes near Dragomir, Southern Bulgaria. Captain Georgi Bogdanov Rusev and First Lieutenant Sasho Dimitrov Nikolov are killed in crash.

2003: Bulgarian National Bank introduces Real-time Interbank Gross Settlement (RINGS) System.

2021: US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposes Magnitsky Act sanctions on three Bulgarians: businessman Vasil Bozhkov, former MP Delyan Peevski, and Ilko Zhelyazkov, former Deputy Director of Bulgaria's State Agency for Technical Operations and Deputy Chair of National Bureau for Control of Special Intelligence Means, on account of their role in corruption in Bulgaria, as well as on their networks, which total 64 legal entities. The three individuals and their companies are denied access to US financial system, all their assets in US are frozen, and US persons are prohibited from conducting transactions with them. On same date, US State Department imposes sanctions on Bulgarian officials Aleksandar Manolev, Petar Haralampiev and Krasimir Tomov, as well as on Peevski and Zhelyazkov, for their alleged involvement in corruption, barring them and their family members from entering US.
