Speaking at the sixth edition of Green Transition Forum hosted by Sofia Event Center here on Monday, Energy Minister Iva Petrova said that structural diversification is important in order to ensure energy security in Europe. The forum is organized by Dir.bg with BTA among its media partners.
According to Petrova, structural diversification can be achieved through reliable partners and interconnected infrastructure. She said that our region is an excellent example of such cooperation, citing the Vertical Gas Corridor as an example.
She added that, if there is cooperation, trusted partners, and interconnected infrastructure, diversification can happen quickly.
Petrova believes that the immediate risks to energy security are not so much related to supply disruptions, but rather to market risks.
There is a competition on a global scale for resources, markets, and technologies, Petrova added. According to her, successful energy systems are diversified ones. Bulgaria should also be mentioned, because the country constantly seeks diversification, relies on nuclear energy, works continuously to phase out the use of coal, she added.
Klaus-Dieter Borchardt, former European Commission Deputy Director-General for Energy, said that the Vertical Gas Corridor is not just an ordinary project, but a strategic project for sustainability, because it provides Europe’s answer to supply challenges. Europe must not make the mistake of viewing the infrastructure as regional, because it transcends borders and provides security of supply for the entire region, he noted.
