MEP Eva Maydell from GERB/EPP has been appointed as the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Bulgaria’s readiness to join the eurozone. Maydell confirmed the appointment to BTA on Thursday. The European Parliament is expected to discuss and vote on the report during a session in Strasbourg in July.
At the end of April, the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs decided to assign the report to a representative of the European People’s Party. Maydell is a substitute member of this committee and a full member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
In early June, the European Commission and the European Central Bank are expected to present special reports, at Bulgaria’s request, on the country’s preparedness to adopt the single European currency. If the assessment is positive, Bulgaria is expected to join the eurozone on January 1 next year.
