Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova will participate in a regular meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) of the European Union on July 8 in Brussels, her ministry said. The session is considered crucial as it marks the final step in Bulgaria’s path toward joining the eurozone.
On July 8, the Council is expected to adopt three legal acts that will conclude the EU-level accession procedure: a Council Decision on the adoption of the euro by Bulgaria, a Council Regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 974/98 regarding the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, and a Council Regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 2866/98 concerning the conversion rate for the euro in Bulgaria.
With the adoption of these acts, Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone will be officially confirmed, paving the way for the country to adopt the euro as its official currency on January 1, 2026.
Earlier on Tuesday, the European Parliament is expected to issue its opinion on a draft Council Decision approving Bulgaria’s entry into the eurozone. The opinion has already received preliminary approval from the Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and its Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
Ahead of the ECOFIN meeting, Minister Petkova is scheduled to make a brief doorstep statement around 9.30 am Bulgarian time.
A formal welcoming ceremony marking Bulgaria’s entry as the 21st member of the eurozone is expected to begin at 5 pm Bulgarian time. The minister’s statement and the ceremony will be streamed live on the official European Commission channel and on the Facebook page “Za evroto BG” – https://www.facebook.com/zaevrotobg/.
