Bulgaria welcomed the consistent efforts of the US and President Donald Trump aimed at achieving a ceasefire and establishing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, the Council of Ministers said on Facebook on Saturday.

"The final terms of a future peace agreement would directly affect the security of Bulgaria, the European Union and all of Europe. In this regard, it is necessary to work in close coordination on the 28-point document presented by the United States in the pursuit of sustainable peace," the post reads.

"We remain committed to working with our EU and US partners to ensure that the future peace agreement is properly observed. We will monitor to ensure that Ukraine receives reliable guarantees for its security. The Republic of Bulgaria maintains its position that in the 21st century internationally recognized borders should not be altered by force," the Cabinet added.

The Government stressed that Bulgaria has been consistent in its support for Ukraine from the outbreak of hostilities to the present day. "The Ukrainian people alone can determine their own future and direction of development, as well as take decisions regarding the nature of any proposed peace agreement and its implications for the future of Ukrainian citizens," the statement reads.
