The EU Council on General Affairs will discuss next week the state of the rule of law in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Germany, according to the agenda for the upcoming meeting. Such discussions are held regularly and concern all EU member states.
The European Commission is expected to summarize the main findings from the annual Rule of Law Report for the EU, presented in July. The four countries mentioned will then have the opportunity to inform the others about the progress made over the past year regarding the rule of law and to answer questions.
The annual EU Council dialogue on the rule of law was initiated in 2015, and since 2020 it has been expanded to include discussions on general rule-of-law issues as well as country-specific debates. Each year, European ministers meet in three sessions dedicated to the rule of law in specific groups of countries.
