Peshtera is hosting the third edition of the amateur road cycling race L’Etape Bulgaria by Tour de France. On August 10, 1,200 cyclists from 16 countries will compete in two distances - 58 km and 112 km, Daniel Dukov, a representative of the organizers, told reporters here on Saturday. He noted that one of the biggest challenges for participants will be a 24-kilometer climb to the resort village of St Constantine.
Peshtera Municipality Mayor Yordan Mladenov said that the programme also includes a 5-kilometer family ride, a chance to explore an open-air Tour de France museum, live concerts, and more.
Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov opened the event, emphasizing that it "gives Bulgaria the opportunity to be part of the major sports scene." He noted that it also promotes an active lifestyle and brings people together from around the world. In Zafirov’s words, the participants will serve as ambassadors for Bulgaria, this country’s tourism and the natural beauty of the Rhodope Mountains.
