Talking at the 2025 Global Forum on Agriculture (GFA) in Paris, Bulgarian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Lozana Vassileva said that young farmers should be placed at the centre of agricultural policy, with their interests treated as a priority. She noted, as quoted by her Ministry, that attracting new participants to the sector is essential for its future and requires an integrated approach that combines knowledge, technology, and government support.

The GFA was held at the headquarters of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Vassileva presented Bulgaria’s vision for generational renewal in agriculture and for encouraging young people to develop sustainable and competitive farms. She noted that this is a strategic priority in the Ministry’s long-term policy framework for the agricultural sector. According to 2023 data, the share of young Bulgarian farmers managing agricultural holdings exceeds the EU average, standing at 28% compared to 18% for those aged 55 and over.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted the importance of innovation and new technologies in agriculture, along with improving farmers’ digital and green skills.

GFA 2025, focusing on “Attracting New Farmers for the Future of Agriculture”, brought together representatives of governments, international organizations, research institutions and farming communities from around the world. Bulgaria traditionally takes part in OECD’s global agricultural initiatives and contributes actively to policy efforts promoting sustainable growth, innovation, and support for young farmers.
