For the first time, Bulgarian Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova took part as an observer in the regular meeting of the Eurogroup held in Luxembourg on Thursday, the Ministry of Finance said in a press release. Until now, Bulgaria has only taken part in Eurogroup meetings in the inclusive format, attended by finance ministers from all EU member states.
Minister Petkova’s participation marks an important step in Bulgaria’s preparation for full membership in the euro area, expected on January 1, 2026. Her involvement allows the country to gain direct insight into the discussions and decision-making processes within the Eurogroup ahead of accession.
The meeting focused on economic prospects in the euro area, fiscal developments in individual member states, and macroeconomic forecasts. Finance ministers and central bank governors also discussed their coordinated positions for the upcoming G20 and International Monetary Fund meetings, traditionally held at the end of October, this year hosted in Washington, D.C., the ministry said.
