The European Commission’s (EC) proposal for a regulation on the phasing out of Russian gas transit has now reached its seventh draft, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov told the parliamentary Committee on Energy.
The document says that short-term contracts would be terminated in 2026, while long-term contracts would end by 2028, the Minister noted, adding that implementing these measures requires guaranteeing the stability of Bulgartransgaz.
“In this regard, I have already held talks with ministers from the region. I have also sent a letter to Bulgargaz, asking them to reach out to all operators and companies in each country in the region we have worked with and explore options for launching new long-term contracts as early as 2026, using the capacity available at Alexandroupolis. This would ensure sufficient gas supplies, allowing us to steadily increase imports while preserving transit flows,” he said.
“I must guarantee that these routes can be utilized. The EC's first and foremost requirement is to maximize the use of current transmission infrastructure. Bulgaria’s connections to new pipelines along the Vertical Gas Corridor, as well as ongoing network expansions, also create opportunities and that is why, the main goal is to avoid a drop in Bulgartransgaz’s revenues,” he added.
The Minister noted that Balkan Stream will be completely paid off from its own revenues next year.
