A new lane for trucks over 12 tonnes will be opened at the Danube Bridge in Ruse to improve traffic flow from Bulgaria to Romania, Ruse Regional Governor Dragomir Draganov said on Saturday. The initiative, led by the Customs Agency, comes in response to increased traffic and ongoing bridge repairs which started last July.
The lane will be used flexibly by reassigning one of the existing lanes currently designated for cars. Now there are 10 lanes at the checkpoint: six for light vehicles and four for trucks. It was decided that the additional lane, designated for trucks with three or more axles, will be put into operation only when there is no queue of passenger vehicles on the Bulgarian side.
Draganov said nearly 1,600 trucks crossed into Romania in the last 24 hours alone. So far this year, over 238,000 trucks and 730,000 vehicles in total have used the bridge, marking a 20% increase compared to a year earlier.
