Parliament Wednesday voted down a proposal for establishing an ad hoc committee to look into allegations for a shady energy business empire owned by businessman Hristo Kovachki. The establishment of a parliamentary committee of inquiry was proposed by MPs of Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria.
The motion was prompted by findings of the Anti-Corruption Fund (ACF) regarding the Orion company managed by businessman Hristo Kovachki. The ACF investigation is quoted as revealing illegal financial incentives for civil servants, multi-million tax and social-security fraud , greenhouse gas allowances fraud and leaks of information about upcoming European Public Prosecutor's Office investigations. Documents and witness accounts published by the Fund shed a light on mechanisms that distort the market, harm consumers, compromise energy security, and erode public trust in institutions.
The “for” votes for the motion came from Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria; Vazrazhdane; Democracy, Rights and Freedoms; MECh and Velichie, plus 1 vote from GERB-UDF and 2 from BSP – United Left. The abstentions came from GERB-UDF; MRF – New Beginning; BSP – United Left; and There Is Such a People.
