site.btaLet's Unite and Present Bulgaria in Its Best Light Before the World, Says Pomorie Mayor

The mayor of Pomorie, Ivan Aleksiev, called on the Bulgarian media to be more accurate and positive in their coverage of the tourism sector during the opening of the BG Tourism - Summer 2025 forum, organized by BTA at the Grand Hotel Pomorie.
“The media are not our enemies, but let them be our friends—if not ours, then at least their own country's,” Aleksiev said. He pointed out that Bulgaria is a popular tourist destination with unique natural and cultural attractions, but is often portrayed in a negative light due to inaccurate or exaggerated media coverage.
The mayor also touched on the topic of the spread of information about fuel oil on the beach, which he said was exaggerated in the media. He said that the incident involving fuel oil on the beach was presented as an “ecological apocalypse,” even though the real situation did not warrant such alarm.
“If we had trusted some media outlets, we would not be here today—we would have been evacuated. They presented such an apocalypse that if you listened to them, you would think that the coastline had been destroyed,” Aleksiev said.
The mayor made a clear request to journalists – not to create artificial negativity, but to seek balance in the information – neither laudatory nor manipulative. He cited as a good example the way in which competing tourist destinations abroad promote themselves.
“Even when they have rain or fires, their season is always sunny and cloudless – at least in their presentation to the world. Let's start thinking that way too,” he urged.
Aleksiev said Bulgaria has unique natural and cultural assets—the sea, sun, mud, healing meadows, mountains, and a rich cultural and historical heritage—and that it's time to show off these treasures with pride and confidence.
“There are shortcomings, we know that. The state, local authorities, and businesses are working to eliminate them. But let's unite and show our country as it deserves to be seen – with dignity and positivity,” he said.
Aleksiev concluded his speech with an appeal: “Let's not embarrass ourselves in front of foreigners!”
The BG Tourism – Summer 2025 forum was opened by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and continues with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, industry organizations, hoteliers, mayors, and experts from the sector, who are discussing key issues related to the sustainable development of tourism, the promotion of Bulgaria as a destination, and preparations for the upcoming active season.
