The plan of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works is to improve the safety of the most critical and neglected road sections before the start of the summer season, Minister Ivan Ivanov said on bTV’s morning show.

“For the first time, on my initiative, we contacted representatives of the tourism industry and reached an agreement in principle that whatever repairs are carried out on the roads leading tourist traffic to the Black Sea will be coordinated with them directly to determine the most suitable timing,” the minister said.

According to him, there are some 500 km of road in this country which are described as dangerous and which are being made safe, including the Trakia motorway. Repairs on it are expected to be completed on June 12 or by June 19 if bad weather extends them.

"It is clear to everyone that after four years of doing nothing, Bulgaria's roads are not in the best condition. We spare no resources to get the main roads repaired," the minister assured. Ivan Ivanov also said that he does not hesitate to sanction builders who do not fulfil their commitments, and this will continue as a policy as long as he is in the ministry.

According to him, Northern Bulgaria is currently the most disadvantaged part of the country, as it has no motorway.
