Approximately two-thirds (67.4%) of all goods transported within the European Union in 2023 were transported by sea, when considering the quantity of goods and the distance traveled (tonne kilometers), shows a Eurostat summary published on Wednesday on the website of the statistical office.

Road freight transport was 25.3% of all freight, while rail transport was 5.5%. Inland waterways carried 1.6% of freight transport, and the share of air transport was 0.2%.
