Some 37,000 people were engaged in research and development (R&D) in Bulgaria in 2022, with a growth of 7% in just one year, the Government information service reported here on Wednesday.

This is noted in the report on the implementation of the first stage of the National Strategy for Research Development 2017-2030 adopted by the Government. Half of the research workforce is concentrated in enterprises - the highest share following a continuous growth since 2013. In the last year alone, the increase in R&D staff in the business sector is close to 15%.

In 2022, spending on research and development in Bulgaria has reached BGN 1,266 million, an increase of nearly 18% compared to the previous year.

In another decision, the Government approved an additional BGN 16,920,831 to finance the classes for acquiring qualifications in protected specialties and vocations for which there is an expected shortage of workers on the labour market. The funds will provide the necessary financial resources for the training of personnel in occupations and industries needed by the local, regional and national economy in the long term.
