The cost of an average Easter meal in Bulgaria has risen by around 11% compared with 2025, according to research by the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research Education and Training.
The increase is driven mainly by a roughly 20% rise in lamb prices, alongside notable hikes in eggs (up 33%) and fresh vegetables, with lettuce prices more than doubling year-on-year. Traditional items such as sweet bread, wine and soft drinks also add to the overall cost.
A typical Easter table for a four-member household is estimated at about EUR 64 (BGN 125), up from around BGN 113 last year.
According to experts, state support remains insufficient, noting that the EUR 50 Easter bonus for pensioners covers only about three-quarters of the needed amount, while lower supplements for higher-income pensioners cover even less.
Rising fuel and energy prices, linked to global market trends and tensions in the Middle East, are among the key factors pushing food costs higher, along with increased production expenses and price speculation ahead of Bulgaria's eurozone entry.
