The 2024 Bulgarian film Klopka (The Trap), directed by Nadezhda Koseva, will be screened at Japan's EU Film Days 2026 festival, the Embassy of Bulgaria in Tokyo said on Facebook on Friday.
The film is included in the festival programme with Japanese and English subtitles, with screenings in Tokyo scheduled for May 19 and May 22 at Theatre Image Forum.
Described as an eco-thriller with dramatic elements, the film follows a lonely man living by the Danube whose life is upended by plans to build a nuclear waste repository in the area. As he takes on economic interests and local authorities, he becomes a defender of nature and human dignity, the embassy added.
The embassy said Klopka's festival screening gives international audiences an opportunity to discover contemporary Bulgarian cinema and themes related to culture and environmental challenges.
The EU Film Days 2026 festival will run from May 16 to 29 in Tokyo, and in Nagoya, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Fukuoka.
