In 2024, liabilities of Bulgarian state-owned enterprises under EU Directive 2011/85 were 8.80% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) wrote on its website on Monday. Of these, liabilities of financial enterprises were 0.88% of GDP, and liabilities of enterprises engaged in non-financial activities amounted to 7.91%.

In 2023, liabilities of Bulgarian state-owned enterprises stood at 9.32% of GDP.

The data on liabilities of state-owned enterprises are derived from the annual activity reports submitted to the NSI in accordance with the Statistics Act. The scope includes state-owned enterprises classified in the sectors “Non-financial enterprises”, “Financial corporations” and “Non-profit institutions serving households”, but which are controlled by the “General government” sector and its subsectors, the NSI said.
