The cost of goods in Bulgaria’s consumer basket has increased by one lev in a week, reaching BGN 98, said Vladimir Ivanov, Chair of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets, at a Monday briefing at the Commission’s headquarters. He presented the institution’s weekly review of wholesale price movements for basic food products.

According to Ivanov, the change represents a typical trend for the autumn–winter food supply period. He noted that vegetables, in particular, are showing significant fluctuations depending on availability.

The prices of green peppers, potatoes, onions, cabbage, lemons and apples fell during the past week. Ivanov added that further decreases in cabbage and apple prices are expected over the coming weeks.

Prices rose for tomatoes (by BGN 0.24), cucumbers (by BGN 0.30), carrots, courgettes, grapes and bananas.

Pork and chicken each increased by BGN 0.18, flour by BGN 0.02 and sunflower oil by BGN 0.01, Ivanov reported. Eggs and beans maintained their prices from the previous week. Cheese, yellow cheese, yoghurt, fresh milk and sugar became cheaper.

Ivanov added that there are no market distortions and that a normal competitive environment prevails.
