The Director of the State Institute for Culture under the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, Snezhana Yoveva-Dimitrova, Thursday officially opened the exhibition High Voices, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the institute. The event took place at the Cube Gallery in Sofia’s Toplocentrala Centre for Contemporary Art.

“The exhibition addresses a very serious, ambitious, conceptually well-grounded topic,” she said.

Curator Vladiya Mihaylova said: ”This exhibition has many layers. There are more authors than meet the eye. The major event that underlies my curatorial interest and the entire exhibition is the Ruse gassing incident, the brave actions of the people there who gathered in the square to defend a fundamental right - the right to breathe. This is intrinsically linked to the right to speak and to have a voice.”

The Director of the State Institute for Culture noted that the concept of High Voices reflects their mission – to be a structure that stands up and clearly articulates the role of culture in dialogue and in foreign policy. “I believe this is a promising exhibition and its launch here will inspire new initiatives beyond our country’s borders,” Yoveva-Dimitrova said.
