Philosophical Discussion in Sofia to Focus on Intellectual Legacy of Women in Humanities

The twelfth edition of the series of discussions "Philosophical Evenings at the Library" will be themed "Women in Philosophy", announced the Critique and Humanism publishing house, which, together with the Goethe Institute Library in Bulgaria, is the organizer of the event. It will take place on February 29 in Sofia’s Goethe Institut.

"We have deliberately and (self-)ironically chosen a rare day, February 29, to talk about something rare, alas, in the course of the centuries until today: women in philosophy. Let's argue whether there is a difference in the way the so-called "masculine" and "feminine" views of philosophy place their emphases on thinking," the initiators of the discussion said.

Their idea is that this conversation will begin to shine a brighter light on the intellectual heritage of women in the so-called canon of philosophy, but also of the humanities in general.

"Since we inevitably had to limit ourselves, we turned our attention to women working in the 20th century and the present. And instead of continuing to limit ourselves - for example to a specific topic - we chose to trace several indicative paths in philosophy in parallel at several points, in order to then see what points of contact they might have: the paths of Edith Stein, Hannah Arendt, Julia Kristeva, Martha Nussbaum, and Judith Butler," the organizers specify.

Paula Angelova, who is a researcher on Edith Stein, will participate in the discussion. Svetlana Sabeva will talk about Hannah Arendt, Miglena Nikolchina is a specialist in the work of Julia Kristeva, Antoaneta Koleva will present Judith Butler. Moderator of the meeting Stiliyan Yotov will talk about the path of Martha Nussbaum. Judith Butler's new book “The Force of Nonviolence” will also be the focus of the conversation.
