The 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews was celebrated at the Cultural Centre Bancaja in Valencia, Spain. The event was attended by representatives of the Jewish community Aviv, consul generals and honorary consuls accredited in Valencia, Godella Mayor Teresa Bueno Marquez and Chirivel Mayor Michel Montaner, representatives of the Bar Association in Valencia, Bulgarian actor Vassil Vassilev - Zouek and others. The celebrations were organized by the Bulgarian Consulate General in the city, the Nova Duma newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Visitors had the opportunity to view the exhibition "The Power of Civil Society during the Holocaust. The Bulgarian Story 1940-1944" and to see the Bulgarian-German co-production "Journey to Jerusalem" directed by Ivan Nichev and starring Vassil Vassilev - Zouek.

The Bulgarian Consul General in Valencia, Nadia Krasteva, highlighted the courage and high morality of the Bulgarian people “who resisted the pressure of the Nazi regime and saved their entire Jewish community of 48,000 people from deportation to the Nazi concentration camps of death during the Second World War”. She stressed the importance of the Bulgarian society's feat in saving Bulgarian Jews and described it as an outstanding example for today's generations in the fight against anti-Semitism and all manifestations of hatred. In her speech, the Consul General also drew attention to the role of Bulgarian diplomacy in saving lives during the Holocaust.
"Diplomats like Nikola Petsev, Lyuben Zlatarov, Nikola Vanchev, Henry Levenson, Boyan Atanasov, who issued transit visas and saved thousands of Jews, including many children and women, are proof of bravery and of the truly democratic and tolerant Bulgarian people," said Krasteva.

The consul of our country Ilian Iliev introduced the audience to the historical facts and the efforts of public figures, representatives of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, politicians and intellectuals who refused to betray their Jewish compatriots and managed to keep them out of the death camps.
