The Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) left Cartagena on Wednesday to continue her voyage back to Varna after its successful first participation in the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic expedition to Livingston Island. RSV 421 got underway at 12 pm Central European Time on April 19.

The ship was escorted by a cutter until she left the port as a local harbour pilot was temporarily on board to help the crew get the vessel out to sea safely.

RSV 421 replenished her stocks of fuel, foodstuffs, and fresh water during her stay in the Spanish city of Cartagena, preparing for the last two weeks of her voyage.

A group of 24 cadets from the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, on the Black Sea, arrived in the Spanish city of Cartagena on Tuesday to conduct a two-week sailing practice aboard RSV 421. Accompanied by three naval officers and one civilian instructor, the future sailors will be on the ship during its trip from Spain back to Bulgaria.

The ship will proceed to Piraeus, Greece, where a two-day discussion of mutual cooperation between the Naval Academy in Varna and the Greek Naval Academy will take place. The ship is expected to complete its full voyage on May 2, when it will dock in Varna.

BTA's Daily News editor Konstantin Karagyozov is the only member of the media who is travelling on board the ship to Livingston Island and back and covered the Bulgarian expedition on site throughout its stay in Antarctica.
