Outgoing Culture Minister Marian Bachev reviewed his one-year tenure, noting progress on key priorities despite a complex political and financial environment. “I have always operated on the principle that you take a public office it is to do your job well,” he wrote on Facebook.
According to Bachev, when he took office on January 16, 2025, the Ministry of Culture faced accumulated unpaid obligations to cultural institutions, years-long delays in director competitions, and missed deadlines related to hosting a session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Bachev emphasized that Bulgaria successfully chaired the session of the World Heritage Committee, even though it was held in Paris, and that the status of Nessebar as a World Heritage site has been preserved. He noted that the country consistently fulfills its commitments to maintain this status.
The minister also announced that in the coming days, the Center for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol will be officially designated as the Institute for Underwater Heritage – Regional Center for Underwater Archaeology of the Black Sea Region, a UNESCO Category 2 center.
