Sofia is a symbol of freedom, dignity and resilience, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev wrote on Facebook on Sunday. In the post, he marked the 148th anniversary of the city’s liberation.

Sofia is not just a city with a long history, Terziev wrote in his official Facebook profile. Sofia was a city that had survived wars, divisions and crises, but always found the strength to stand back up and move forward, he added.

Terziev wrote that Sofia still carried the same spirit: the spirit of people who did not give up, who defended their freedom and believed the future was built with responsibility, memory and courage.

“Our duty is to keep this freedom alive, not only in words but in the decisions we make every day for the city and the people in it. We bow to history and to everyone who gave their strength and their lives so that Sofia can be free,” Terziev wrote.

Earlier on Sunday, a reenactment of the battles for Sofia’s liberation 148 years ago took place in North Park, Nadezhda District said. More than 100 people joined the event, co-organized with the National Alliance Edinenie association.

Also earlier on Sunday, Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Daniil led a divine liturgy at St Nedelya Cathedral, followed by a thanksgiving service to mark 148 years since Sofia’s liberation. He later joined a procession and laid flowers at the Bulgarian Volunteer memorial, the Tsar Liberator monument and the monument to Lieutenant General Iosif Gurko in the capital.
