site.btaWWF Submits Petition for Purchase of Firefighting Aircraft
Representatives of the environmental organization WWF Bulgaria and members of the public submitted a petition to the Council of Ministers on Thursday, calling for the purchase of specialized aircraft for fighting forest fires.
The petition, signed by more than 13,500 people, urges the Prime Minister and the Government to implement the National Assembly’s July 23, 2024 decision and take the necessary steps to acquire firefighting aircraft, said Vladimir Ivanov of WWF Bulgaria.
He noted that this country and much of Southern Europe endured devastating wildfires in the summer, resulting in extensive losses of land, property damage, and, tragically, human casualties. Ivanov added that people often forget the scale of the devastation once autumn rains begin, which prompted the organization to launch the petition.
He pointed out that countries such as Greece and Turkiye operate dozens of specialized firefighting aircraft. Ivanov emphasized that both funding and a parliamentary decision are already in place, stressing the importance of moving ahead with the purchase. The petition remains open, with expectations that more citizens and organizations will support the initiative.
