Due to the euro changeover, Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova has proposed that December 31, 2025, and January 2, 2026, are declared as one-time non-working days. This proposal is included in a draft decision of the Council of Ministers, published on the Public Consultation Portal.

The reason for the proposal is the official introduction of the euro as Bulgaria’s currency on January 1, 2026.

In view of the country’s accession process to the eurozone, the draft decision is said to be a measure contributing to the implementation of the completion of Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area", outlined in the Government Program for the period 2025–2029, the Finance Minister says in her report.

The document explains that declaring non-working days immediately before and after the euro introduction date is necessary to allow sufficient time for the technical reconfiguration and update of systems, and to help both the financial and non-financial sectors adapt. This will help minimize operational risks and ensure a smooth and problem-free transition to the euro.
