The National Assembly decided on Thursday to rename the specialized private higher education institution for security and economics in Plovdiv as the Academy of National and Information Security.
The higher education institution notified MPs about the rationale behind the name change, pointing to the steady rise in enrollment across seven bachelor's and master's programs in national, regional, and global security, along with improvements to its physical infrastructure. The Committee on Education and Science of the National Assembly reported that recruiting international students and partners has been challenging because the translated name previously suggested the institution operated at the secondary-school level.
Vazrazhdane MP Angel Yanchev said his parliamentary group would not support the decision and noted that it was being expedited in both committee and plenary. He argued that this would be the first private academy and that granting academy status for commercial purposes was unacceptable.
