Citizens are protesting in front of the Parliament building in Sofia on Wednesday. The protest is held under the slogan "The Legitimate National Assembly of the Bulgarian People against an Illegitimately Elected Parliament".

"Today is the first working day of the 51st National Assembly, but we all know that it is illegitimate because it was elected through fraud and manipulation of the Bulgarians' vote," said Simeon Slavchev, Chairman of the Morality, Initiative, Patriotism (MIR) party and representative of the Awakeners Civic Initiative. According to Slavchev, the main problem is that the powers that be are not solving any of the citizens' problems, while the coalition of incompatible parties is leading the country towards catastrophe.

The protesters will not block roads today; the action is symbolic, but "our actions will become more radical," Slavchev said. "The idea is to block key intersections and roads in the future."

"There is no formal organizer; Bulgarian citizens self-organized and made this protest happen," Slavchev also said.

He commented on the August 31 visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Bulgaria, calling it "treason".

Demonstrators are holding posters featuring the Bulgarian flag, reading "No to NATO". Police stopped protesters from entering the Parliament building, where the first sitting of the autumn session is taking place.
