Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) - New Beginning Floor Leader Delyan Peevski Tuesday urged National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova to convene an extraordinary meeting of Parliament's Environment Committee to draft and adopt a decision by the National Assembly for the immediate, effective, and decisive resolution of the systemic water crisis.

In a statement sent to the media, Peevski points out that the escalating problem of drinking water shortages for the population requires immediate and decisive action on the part of the State. "Because if today at least half a million Bulgarians are affected by the water crisis, suffering from the failure to resolve the water problem, if the procrastination, postponement, and passing of the problem from one to another like a hot potato continues, tomorrow everyone will be at risk," he adds.

According to him, water resources are managed by four ministries, several secondary administrators, municipalities, and commercial companies, which pass the issue to each other, and this is one of the reasons why "a critical mass of people in Bulgaria do not have unhindered access to drinking water". Among the urgent measures that, according to Peevski, need to be taken are drilling, suitability tests, new water sources, cleaning of water sources and water pipes leading to populated areas, as well as replacement, repairing and constructing the entire water supply and sewerage network and irrigation systems for agricultural land and industrial needs.

"However, since there is no centralized, functioning water management system in the country, it is necessary to establish a national water board comprising representatives of all institutions and agencies involved in water resource management," writes the MRF - New Beginning Floor Leader. He believes that this would guarantee the financial security of all projects through the national budget, European funding, and capital raised from the Bulgarian Development Bank.
