“We will strive to foster understanding among Bulgarians about the need to increase defence investments,” said Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov during a meeting with Swedish Ambassador Katarina Rangnitt, his ministry said.

The talks focused on the processes related to the modernization of the Bulgarian Army. The minister noted the government’s efforts to accelerate the modernization of the armed forces by 2030, by tapping the opportunities offered by the European Union’s European Defence Industry Reinforcement through Common Procurement Act (SAFE).

“In today’s realities, we will aim to work toward achieving public understanding in Bulgaria regarding the need to increase defense investments and the positive long-term effects for the country,” said the Minister. “Because investments in defence capabilities are a guarantee of security, prosperity, and more jobs, not a waste of funds. And we will continue to work toward gaining conscious public support.”

The discussion also covered current issues related to collective defense, allied responsibilities, and the commitments of countries within the EU and NATO.

Topics discussed included the decisions from the NATO Summit in The Hague, the security of NATO’s Northern and Eastern flanks, increasing the resilience of each allied country, building strong national defence capabilities, and each member state's contribution to the implementation of NATO’s plans.

The meeting also addressed current global security environment changes. In the context of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, both sides acknowledged the growing security threats and shared a common view on supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Minister Zapryanov and Ambassador Rangnitt also discussed deepening bilateral relations in the field of defence through participation in joint military exercises, training, and other activities of mutual interest.
