By Saturday evening, six firefighting teams were battling a blaze near the Lesovo border crossing to Turkiye, with at least three more fire engines expected to join, said Tatiana Pavlova, spokesperson for the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior – Yambol (RDI MOI-Yambol), to BTA. The firefighters’ efforts were being hindered by the rugged and rocky terrain, which prevented fire trucks from accessing the area; more reliance is placed on manpower, Pavlova added. At present, there is no immediate danger to the nearby village of Lesovo, the police reported.
Forestry officials and border police are also participating in the firefighting efforts, RDI MOI-Yambol confirmed.
The fire was reported around 4 p.m. on Saturday. It broke out in a field near a buffer parking area. Initial information indicates that the flames destroyed an agricultural machine, and strong winds caused it to spread across the road into difficult-to-access terrain between the border checkpoint and the village of Lesovo.
In neighbouring Burgas Region, the Burgas-Malko Tarnovo road has been closed for several hours as firefighting operations continue in the area near the village of Marinka, the press office of the Burgas Regional Administration told BTA on Saturday evening.
