GERB leader Boyko Borissov Friday said Daniel Mitov had been sent to the Interior Ministry to ensure that it works well with the public. Borissov commented to the media on demands for Mitov's resignation by Vazrazhdane and Continue the Change following the death of a 36-year-old man after he was taken in custody in Varna.

Mitov said this was a case of police overreach.

Borissov said: "The incident in Varna is extremely distressing, and I can only offer my condolences to the family of the deceased. As for Daniel Mitov, he was appointed to the Interior Ministry precisely to ensure that it serves the public effectively. His adaptation period is over, and it is high time he put pressure on the professional leadership to do their job. If they fail to deliver, then the question of resignations must be raised."

Borissov was adamant that GERB does not want Mitov's resignation. "I do not want it, and we do not want his resignation. We provided the Interior Ministry with large resources so that the officers there, whom we stand behind, can receive very good training," Borissov added. According to him, if they are well trained, they will not have problems detaining such people in such situations. "When they are not well trained, they overuse force," he said.

In response to criticism that the Interior Ministry lacks a professional leader, Borissov said the ministry has no secretary general because Radev refuses to approve an appointee: "Let [Prime Minister Rosen] Zhelyazkov say if he has proposed a new secretary general."
