site.btaParliament Chair: Decisions on EU Еnlargement Should Be Taken Unanimously

"We support the idea that decisions on EU enlargement should be taken unanimously," said Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova, who attended the lecture "Sofia, Skopje, and Brussels in the same boat, not forgetting Belgrade", given by journalist Boyko Vassilev as part of the "Macedonia" lecture series at the Macedonian Scientific Institute in Sofia.

"All foreign ministers and presidents we meet within the European Union raise the issue of a 'qualified majority'," Kiselova said, noting that Bulgaria is one of the few countries that oppose this and support unanimity in decisions on enlargement. 

With regard to the Republic of North Macedonia, the decision of the National Assembly is a decision, even though the first part is a declaration, so that it is binding not only on the government and all other state bodies that communicate with the outside world, but also on the National Assembly itself, so that the next ones, if they decide to make a change to the framework, the decision will be taken as an act of the National Assembly, Kiselova said.

All 17 MEPs also signed a declaration, which they sent to their political families, to make it clear that regardless of their affiliation, the members of the European Parliament in Bulgaria support this decision of the National Assembly, that they have no claims, but want to implement what is in the European consensus, Kiselova noted.  

 According to her, Bulgaria supports the European integration of the Western Balkan countries in line with their own progress.
