The road safety system is poorly organised and practically does not work , Nikolay Popov, the father of Siyana Popova, who died in a road accident on March 31, 2025, said on Tuesday at a press conference at BTA's National Press Club in Sofia.
Popov called for real improvements in road safety. The accident that happened to Siyana is repeated every day it rains, he said. And he gave the example of one of the recent truck accidents, in which a truck crashed into a signboard at a gas station near the village of Radomirtsi. According to Popov, the main prerequisites for accidents are two - speeding and a bad road.
"There is a lack of control by the institutions, no one monitors speeding trucks. There are strict drivers, but there is also a grey sector that commits a number of violations on the roads and leads to fatal accidents," he said.
Popov called for the resignations of the leaderships of several institutions involved in road safety. According to him, there should be resignations in the leadership of the State Road Safety Agency, the Road Infrastructure Agency and the Ministry of Interior official responsible for ordering icons with funds from the road safety fund.
The father of the deceased Siyana also announced that he has formed a coalition against the war on roads, to which he invites all media, NGOs, industry organizations in the transport sector, and representatives of state institutions and local authorities.
