The Supreme Court of Cassation upheld the 20-year prison sentence of Georgi Semerdzhiev, a defendant in a car crash case that killed two young women in July 2022, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday. The decision is final and upholds the verdict handed down by the Sofia City Court in March 2023.

The case started at the Supreme Court of Cassation in late September last year but had to be restarted as a member of the jury died.

“I regret what happened and ask the court for a lesser sentence,” Georgi Semerdzhiev said in his last word to the Court in late January, when the last hearing in the case was held.

Semerdzhiev was found guilty on several counts, including causing death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs, using a forged document, and fleeing the scene of an accident. His sentence includes a 20-year term in prison without the possibility of early parole, as well as a permanent ban from driving.
