"We will increase vaccine protection by including new vaccines in the immunization calendar and in the recommended immunizations, said Health Minister Silvi Kirilov during a roundtable discussion on vaccine-preventable diseases in Sofia on Tuesday. The event was organized by the Health Ministry under the patronage of the Health Committee at the National Assembly.

"I have submitted an inquiry to the National Expert Council on Immunizations and to vaccine manufacturers regarding immunization against chickenpox, respiratory syncytial virus, and meningococcal infections," Kirilov noted.

"It is proven that vaccines not only save lives, they stop epidemics, save children and adults, reduce human suffering, and change the course of human development. In Bulgaria, there have been no new cases of diphtheria, polio, or rubella for years. However, we must remember that they can return if carelessness prevails over knowledge, fear over confidence," Kirilov warned, and noted that in 2024, three newborns lost their lives to pertussis (whooping cough).

The Health Minister pointed out the issue of cervical cancer in Bulgaria, noting that it is preventable with a vaccine. He said the same about influenza and pneumonia. Kirilov emphasized that vaccine-preventable diseases affect various areas of life – healthcare, education, and have a negative impact on financial and social status, leading to reduced quality of life and missed opportunities for professional and social realization. "Every vaccine administered is a sign of trust in the healthcare system, health, and national policy," he stressed. Kirilov assured that his ministry will continue to make vaccines more accessible, while also expanding information about their benefits.

The roundtable was opened by Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova. Speeches were also given by the Parliamentary Health Committee Chair Kostadin Angelov and the Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev.
