The President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, noted on Saturday that 100 days have passed since Bulgaria joined the euro area on January 1, 2026.

In a brief post on social media, Lagarde wrote: "It's been 100 days since Bulgaria adopted the euro. From 12 countries using our single currency in 2002 to 21 today."

The text is accompanied by a short video highlighting the development of the single European currency over the years. It says that in 2002 the euro was used by 305 million people in 12 countries, with 7.8 billion euro-banknotes in circulation.

At present the currency is used by 358 million people in 21 countries, and 30.9 billion banknotes are in circulation.
